Size, Media, Style and Date

The Rokeby Venus, painted between 1647 and 1651, is a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque art. The painting measures 122 cm in height and 177 cm in width, making it an impressive work of art. It was created using oil on canvas, which allowed Velázquez to achieve the rich colors and intricate details that are characteristic of his style.

Description of the Image

The Rokeby Venus depicts the Roman goddess of love, beauty and fertility reclining languidly on her bed, her back facing the viewer, and looking into a mirror held by the Roman god of physical love, her son Cupid. The painting is unique in that it shows the body of Venus turned away from the observer of the painting, which adds to its allure and mystery. The Rokeby Venus was long held to be one of Velázquez's final works. In 1951, it was found recorded in an inventory of 1 June 1651 from the Spanish royal collection, which confirms its early date.

The Venus Effect

One of the most intriguing aspects of The Rokeby Venus is the phenomenon known as the Venus effect. This occurs because viewers can see her face reflected in their direction, even though she appears to be looking at herself in the mirror. This creates a sense of intimacy and connection between the viewer and the subject, making it a truly captivating work of art.

The Only Surviving Female Nude by Velázquez

Nudes were extremely rare in seventeenth-century Spanish art, which was policed actively by members of the Spanish Inquisition. Despite this, nudes by foreign artists were keenly collected by the court circle, and this painting was hung in the houses of Spanish courtiers until 1813, when it was brought to England to hang in Rokeby Park, Yorkshire.

A Vision of Female Beauty

The Rokeby Venus, also known as 'The Toilet of Venus' and 'Venus at her Mirror', is one of the most famous paintings in London’s National Gallery. It is a true masterpiece that showcases Velázquez's exceptional talent for capturing the beauty and allure of the female form.
