La rendición de Breda, also known as El cuadro de las lanzas or Las lanzas, is a masterpiece by the Spanish Golden Age painter Diego Velázquez. Completed in 1634-35, this painting illustrates the exchange of keys that occurred three days after the capitulation between Spain and the Netherlands was signed on June 5, 1625. The event took place during the Eighty Years War, which began due to a revolt against Philip II of Spain by the Seventeen Provinces.

Size and Media

This magnificent painting measures 307 x 367 cm and is created using oil on canvas. The large size allows Velázquez to address the details of many individuals, painting the setting across two halves where Spanish soldiers are depicted on one side and youthful Dutch soldiers on the other.

Location

Currently housed in the prestigious Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain, this masterpiece is a must-see for art enthusiasts visiting the museum. The Museo del Prado boasts an impressive collection of European paintings and sculptures from the 14th to the 20th century, making it a premier destination for art lovers worldwide.

Brief Description

The Surrender of Breda is considered one of Velázquez's best artworks, with Jan Morris calling it 'one of the most Spanish of all pictures'. The painting showcases the exchange of keys between Justinus van Nassau, the Dutch governor of Breda, and Ambrosio Spínola, the Genoese general commanding the Spanish forces. Velázquez's use of light and shadow adds depth to the composition, highlighting the elegance and magnanimity of the surrender.

Inspiration

One of Velázquez's contemporaries, Peter Paul Rubens, has been cited as an inspiration for this work. The motion picture Alatriste, a 2006 Spanish epic historical fiction war film directed by Agustín Díaz Yanes, contains a scene showing the surrender of Breda and is influenced by Velázquez's masterpiece.
