About the Artist

Rose Mary Barton RWS, also known as Rose Maynard Barton, was an Anglo-Irish watercolour artist who painted landscapes, street scenes and townscapes of Britain and Ireland. She exhibited with a number of different painting societies, most notably the Watercolour Society of Ireland (WCSI), the Royal Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy.

About 'The Dream'

The Dream is an oil painting by Rose Maynard Barton, created in 1917. The painting depicts a woman lying on a couch, lost in thought or perhaps daydreaming. The muted colours and soft brushstrokes create a sense of calm and tranquility, inviting the viewer to share in the subject's reverie.

The Style

The Dream is an example of cubism, a revolutionary art movement that emerged in the early 20th century. Co-founded by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, cubism sought to break away from traditional perspective and create a new visual language. The style is characterized by its fragmented and abstract depiction of objects, as well as its emphasis on geometric shapes and muted colours.
