About the Artist

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh's North Side) on May 22, 1844. She lived much of her adult life in France, where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children. She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot.

The Painting

The Child's Bath, also known as The Bath, is an 1893 oil painting by Mary Cassatt, measuring 92.1 x 74.9 cm. The artwork showcases her mastery of the Impressionist style and her interest in depicting bathing and motherhood.

Media and Style

Created using oil on canvas, The Child's Bath is a prime example of Cassatt's Impressionist style. The painting features loose brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and naturalistic light, all hallmarks of the Impressionist movement.

Date and Location

Painted in 1893, The Child's Bath is currently on view at the Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago, United States) in Gallery 175.

Description of the Image

In this painting, Cassatt addresses the theme for which she is best known—women and children. The artwork features a mother bathing her child, capturing an intimate moment between them. The overhead perspective, inspired by Japanese Woodcut prints and Edgar Degas, adds a unique angle to the composition, emphasizing the tender connection between the two subjects.

Type of canvas for your painting.

We recommend Linen due to its strength and resistance to decay. Because the Linen is woven from flax, the weave of the Linen shows through the many layers of paint thereby producing a distinctive, authentic look. Because Linen retains its own natural oils, the canvas is more flexible and has a more natural looking weaved finish than Cotton will produce. Mural artworks will be painted on light cotton canvas.
