Early Life and Training
Charles Cooper Henderson, a British painter of horses and coaches, was born on June 14, 1803, in Abbey House, Chertsey, Surrey. His parents were John Henderson and Georgiana Jane (born Keate), with his maternal grandfather being George Keate. Notably, his elder brother,
John Henderson, was an antiquary and benefactor of the
British Museum. Charles Cooper Henderson's early education took place at Winchester School, followed by studies in law. However, it was under Samuel Prout that he received training in painting, influenced by his father, an amateur artist and patron.
Personal Life and Inheritance
In 1828, Henderson married a young girl named Charlotte By, with whom he had nine children, seven of them being boys. This union led to estrangement from his father. Upon his mother's death in 1850, Henderson inherited the family's wealth, which had been accumulated through George Keate and land in Canada. This financial security allowed him to focus on painting.
Legacy and Notable Works
Only two of Henderson's paintings were exhibited at the
Royal Academy, both in the 1840s. His coaching scenes, engraved by himself and others like Henry A. Papprill and Samuel William Fores, are highly valued. The "Fores’s Coaching Recollections" series (Plates I-VI), originally engraved from Henderson's paintings in 1842-43, was republished throughout the 19th century.
Public Collections and Memorial
Henderson's original paintings are housed in several public collections in Dublin and the UK. He was buried in
Kensal Green Cemetery with a memorial at
St Nicholas's Church in Shepperton.
Notable Works: Changing Horses,
All Right,
Pulling Up To Un-Skid,
Waking Up,
The Olden Time, and
The Night Team.
