Giuseppe Bernardi, also known as Torretto, was a prominent mid-18th-century Italian sculptor. He was born in Pagnano, Italy in 1694 and died in Venice in 1773. Bernardi is known for his work on both small and large projects, including the Santa Maria della Fava sculptural project, where he was commissioned to sculpt eight, over-lifesized marble statues of the four Evangelists and the four Western Fathers of the Church. He also worked as a carver of intaglios and was the first teacher of Neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova. Bernardi inherited his uncle's workshop, who was also a sculptor, and was known as 'il Torretto' in honor of his uncle.
