Early Life and Education
Gustaf Olof Cederström, a renowned Swedish painter, was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1845. His father,
Carl Emanuel Cederström, was a naval officer, and his mother, Theresine, was an amateur painter. This artistic inclination was evident from a young age, as Gustaf's interest in history began with the discovery of an ancestor's participation in the Skirmish at Bender.
Artistic Career
Initially, Gustaf pursued a military career, but his passion for art led him to resign his commission in 1870. He then studied with
Ferdinand Fagerlin in Düsseldorf and
Léon Bonnat in Paris, settling there in 1873. His first success came at the Exposition Universelle (1878), with a scene featuring the body of King Karl XII being carried home, which brought him a medal and was later purchased by the Russian Grand Duke Konstantin.
