Early Life and Training
Harpignies, a renowned French landscape painter, was born on June 28, 1819, in Valenciennes, France. His parents, of Belgian origin, intended for him to pursue a business career, but Harpignies' determination to become an artist prevailed. At the age of twenty-seven, he entered
Jean Achard's atelier in Paris, where he acquired a solid foundation in constructive draughtsmanship.
The Barbizon School and Italian Influence
After two years under Achard's tutelage, Harpignies traveled to Italy, returning in 1850. He became acquainted with
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and other Barbizon masters, whose principles and methods influenced his personal art style. In 1860, Harpignies and Corot collaborated on a trip to Italy, further solidifying their artistic bond.
