Richard Cosway R.A, a prominent English portrait painter of the Regency era, is renowned for his exquisite miniatures. Born in Tiverton, Devon, in 1742, Cosway's artistic talent was evident from an early age. He was initially educated at Blundell's School but later moved to London to pursue his passion for painting.
Early Career and Training
Cosway's artistic journey began with lessons from fellow Devonian Thomas Hudson and William Shipley. By 1760, he had established his own business, and his first works were exhibited at the age of 20 in 1762. He was soon in demand, and his talents earned him a prize from the Society of Artists in 1754.

Portrait of Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington, dated 1808, which is now part of the

Awards and Recognition
Cosway was one of the first group of associate members of the
Royal Academy, elected in August 1770, and was later elected a full member in March 1771. He is included in
Johan Zoffany's group portrait of the members of the academy, begun in 1771. Cosway's appointment as
Painter to the Prince of Wales in 1785 marked a significant milestone in his career.
Personal Life and Later Years
Cosway married
Maria Hadfield, an Anglo-Italian artist, in 1781. The couple's marriage was thought to be an arranged one, with Cosway being 20 years her senior. He suffered from mental disorders later in life and spent time in various institutions. Cosway died in London in 1821 and was buried at
Marylebone New Church.
