Domènec Rovira I was born in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Spain in 1608 and died in 1678. He is considered one of the most relevant sculptors of his time. His participation and defense of the sculptor's guild led to its consolidation over the carpenter's guild. Rovira was one of the first sculptors to be recognized with the right to contract and undertake all the work for the realization of a retable. He established his workshop in Barcelona in 1632 and received significant commissions, including a figure of Sant Pau for the Church of Santa Maria del Mar in 1639, the central figure of the main altar for the Bonsuccés Brotherhood in the Convent del Bonsuccés in 1639, and the main altar for the Church of Sant Feliu de Guíxols in 1657-1678. The workshop was continued by his sons, Domènec Rovira II and Salvador Rovira i Alcover.
