Thomas Worthington Whittredge, an American artist of the
Hudson River School, was born on May 22, 1820, in a log cabin near Springfield, Ohio. He began his artistic journey as a young man in Cincinnati, painting landscapes and portraits before traveling to Europe in 1849 to further his training. Whittredge studied at the
Düsseldorf Academy, a major art school of the period, under the tutelage of Emanuel Leutze.

Whittredge's work is characterized by its emphasis on light and soft atmospheric effects, earning him a reputation as a leading member of the second generation of
Hudson River School artists. His travels with fellow artists, including
