Frederic Edwin Church, a prominent figure in the
Hudson River School of American landscape painters, was born on May 4, 1826, in Hartford, Connecticut. He was a direct descendant of Richard Church, a Puritan pioneer from England who accompanied Thomas Hooker on the original journey through the wilderness to what would become Hartford, Connecticut. Church's family wealth allowed him to pursue his interest in art from a very early age.
At eighteen years old, Church became the pupil of
Thomas Cole, a British-born artist and founder of the Hudson River School, in Catskill, New York. This two-year apprenticeship laid the foundation for Church's future success as a landscape painter.
