Early Life and Formation
Gentile da Fabriano, an Italian painter, was born in or near Fabriano, in the Marche region of Italy, around 1370. His mother passed away before 1380, and his father, Niccolò di Giovanni Massi, retired to a monastery in 1385. Little is known about Gentile's early artistic formation, but one of his first known works,
Madonna with Child (c. 1395-1400, now in Berlin), shows the influence of northern Italian late-Gothic painting.
