Early Life and Education
Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, a renowned Russian Romantic painter, was born on July 29, 1817, in Feodosia, Crimea, to an Armenian family. Baptized as Hovhannes Aivazian, Aivazovsky spent most of his life in Feodosia and became one of the greatest masters of marine art.
Aivazovsky received parochial education at Feodosia's St. Sargis Armenian Church and was taught drawing by Jacob Koch, a local architect. He later attended the Russian gymnasium in Simferopol and joined the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg in 1833.
Artistic Career
Aivazovsky's artistic career spanned over six decades, during which he created approximately 6,000 paintings, mostly seascapes. His work was widely admired throughout Europe, and he held numerous solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States.
