His family, originally from Bavaria, struggled financially, with his mother supplementing their income by giving music lessons. Herkomer's education was limited, and he never returned to school after falling ill at a young age.

Artistic Career

  • Sir Hubert Von Herkomer's artistic career began in Southampton, where he started his training at the local school of art.
  • In 1866, he entered the South Kensington Schools for a more serious course of study, leading to his first exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1869.
  • By 1875, Herkomer had established himself as an artist of high distinction with his oil painting, The Last Muster, after a woodblock from 1871.

  • Hard Times (1885; Manchester Art Gallery), showcasing the family of a travelling day-labourer, is one of Herkomer's most known works.
  • He was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1879 and an academician in 1890.
  • In 1885, Herkomer was appointed Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Oxford, a position he held until 1894.

Legacy and Honors

  • In 1899, Herkomer was ennobled as Ritter von Herkomer by King Otto of Bavaria.
  • He was awarded the Pour le Mérite for Arts by Kaiser Wilhelm II in the same year.
