Early Life and Education
Boris Mikhaylovich Kustodiev, a renowned Russian painter and stage designer, was born on March 7, 1878, in Astrakhan, Russia. His father, a professor of philosophy, history of literature, and logic at the local theological seminary, passed away when Boris was young, leaving his mother to shoulder the financial burdens. This early exposure to the struggles of the provincial merchant class would later influence Kustodiev's artistic themes.
Between 1893 and 1896, Kustodiev studied at the theological seminary in Astrakhan, taking private art lessons from Pavel Vlasov, a pupil of Vasily Perov. He then attended Ilya Repin’s studio at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg from 1896 to 1903.
