Marianne North

Marianne North, a prominent English Victorian biologist and botanical artist, left an indelible mark on the world of art and botany. Born in Hastings, England, on October 24, 1830, she was the eldest daughter of a prosperous land-owning family.

Early Life and Training

North's early life was marked by her training as a vocalist under Charlotte Helen Sainton-Dolby. However, her vocal ambitions were short-lived due to her failing voice. She then devoted herself to painting flowers, which would become the cornerstone of her illustrious career.

Extensive Foreign Travels and Plant Discoveries

North's travels took her to various parts of the world, including Syria, the Nile, Sicily, Canada, the United States, Jamaica, Brazil, Tenerife, California, Japan, Borneo, Java, Ceylon, India, Australia, and New Zealand. These journeys not only broadened her perspective but also led to numerous plant discoveries and the creation of a comprehensive gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
