A woman with smooth, pale skin, wearing an ivory-white headdress and a peacock-blue dress, is shown from the hips up in this vertical portrait painting, which has an arched top. The woman’s body and face are angled to our left, and she looks off in that direction with gray eyes. Her smooth cheeks are lightly blushed in her heart-shaped face. She has a high forehead, faint brows, and her full, pale pink lips are closed. Narrow panels of her headdress come down the sides of her face, emphasizing the heart shape. The fabric covers her head and falls in a veil down her back. Her dress comes up high across the back of her neck and then flares out to nearly her armpits across a low, straight neckline. Sheer fabric covers her chest, and the inner part of her neckline has a band of black to each side. The blue dress is lined with gray fur along the neckline, down the front, and on the undersides of voluminous sleeves, which are turned back at her wrists. Black cuffs peek out from under the folds. In her right hand, to our left, she holds a single pink carnation in front of her abdomen with her thumb and first two fingers. She wears a gold ring on the pointer finger of her other hand, in which she holds a string of coral-red beads. A hint of a gold belt is just visible between and behind her hands. The green background behind her glows around her shoulders and deepens to moss green around the arched top of the panel.

Joos Van Cleve

Joos van Cleve, also known as Joos van der Beke, was a prominent painter active in Antwerp around 1511 to 1540. He is known for combining traditional Netherlandish painting techniques with influences of more contemporary Renaissance styles. An active member and co-deacon of the Guild of Saint Luke of Antwerp, he is known mostly for his religious works and portraits of royalty.

Early Life and Training

Joos van Cleve was born around 1485 in the Lower Rhenish region or city named Kleve, from which his name is derived. He began his artistic training around 1505 in the workshop of Jan Joest, whom he assisted in the panel paintings of the high altar for the Nikolaikirche in Kalkar, Lower Rhine, Germany.

Artistic Style and Influences

Joos van Cleve's art shows sensitivity to color and a unique solidarity of figures. He was one of the first to introduce broad landscapes in the backgrounds of his paintings, which would become a popular technique of sixteenth century northern Renaissance paintings. His skills as a portrait artist were highly regarded, demonstrated by a summons to the court of Francis I of France. He painted the king, the queen Eleanor of Austria, and other members of the court.

Notable Works

Some of his notable paintings include The Adoration of the Magi - left wing, created in 1515 using oil on panel, now located in the Palace of Capodimonte (Naples, Italy). Another notable work is The Virgin and Child, which exemplifies his unique blend of artistic traditions. His portrait of Henry VIII of England is of comparable size to that of Francis I, and the compositions and costumes in both portraits are similar.

Legacy

Joos van Cleve's legacy is evident in his numerous works, which can be found in various museums and collections. His son, Cornelis van Cleef, also known as Sotte Cleef, was a painter who worked in the workshop of his father. Joos van Cleve's influence on the northern Renaissance painting style is still evident today, with his works being highly regarded by art enthusiasts and collectors. https://WahooArt.com/@/Joos-Van-Cleve https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joos_van_Cleve https://WahooArt.com/Art.nsf/Art_EN?Open&Query=joos+van+cleve,joos,cleve& https://WahooArt.com/@@/D3YDD7-Joos-Van-Cleve-The-Adoration-of-the-Magi-left-wing https://WahooArt.com/@/Quentin-Massys https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frans_Floris https://WahooArt.com/Art.nsf/Art_EN?Open&Query=quentin+massys,quentin,massys& https://WahooArt.com/@@/D432JQ-Cornelis-Van-Cleef-Or-Cornelis-Van-Der-Beke-Nickname-Sotte-Cleve-('Mad-Clev..')
