Oki Sato, founder and creative director of the Japanese design group nendo, was trained as an architect and has since developed a reputation for designing objects that are both deceptively simple and poetic. Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake challenged nendo to create something with the byproduct from the textile manufacturing process of creating pleats in clothing; the resulting Cabbage chair repurposes that waste material. Sato peels away the individual layers of small, soft sheets until a charming seating surface is revealed.
