**Early Life and Training**
**Otto Müller**, a German painter and printmaker, was born on October 16, 1874, in Liebau (now Lubawka, Kamienna Góra County), Kreis Landeshut, Silesia, Poland. Between 1890 and 1892, he trained in lithography in Görlitz and Breslau. From 1894 to 1896, Müller studied at the
Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and continued his studies in Munich from 1898.
**Artistic Evolution and Expressionism**
Müller's early works were influenced by Impressionism, Jugendstil, and Symbolism. However, upon settling in Berlin in 1908, his style became more expressionist. This period saw him interacting with notable figures like
Wilhelm Lehmbruck,
Rainer Maria Rilke, and
Erich Heckel. In 1910, Müller joined the Dresden-based group
'Die Brücke', a pivotal moment in his expressionist journey.
**Notable Works and Style**
Müller's paintings often featured the unity of humans and nature, characterized by harmonious simplification of form, color, and contours. His notable works include:
- The Starry Night-inspired landscapes
- Expressive nudes and Romani (Gypsy) women, earning him the nickname "Gypsy Müller"
- Use of distemper on coarse canvas for a mat surface finish
- A prolific printmaker with nearly all his prints being lithographs, along with a few woodcuts and etchings
**Legacy and Post-War Impact**
Müller fought as a German soldier in France and Russia during World War I. After the war, he became a professor at the
Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Breslau until his death on September 24, 1930. In 1937, the Nazis seized 357 of his works from German museums, deeming them "degenerate art."
