António dos Santos Ramalho Eanes (Portuguese pronunciation: [ɐ̃ˈtɔniu ʁɐˈmaʎu iˈɐnɨʃ]; born 25 January 1935) is a Portuguese general and politician who was the 16th president of Portugal from 1976 to 1986. He was born in Alcains, Portugal in 1935. Eanes was elected as President of Portugal in 1976, and was re-elected in 1980. He is known for his role in the democratic revolution of 1974, and for his leadership during the transition to democracy in Portugal. Eanes is also known for his role in the 1980 Portuguese presidential election, where he won the election with almost 57 percent of the votes. He is considered as one of the major players in the democratic revolution of 1974, and was supported by the Socialist Party, the Portuguese Communist Party, and the Communist Party of the Portuguese Workers. Eanes is also known for his military career, he served as a General in the Portuguese Army and was decorated with several military honors. He is also known for his role as President of the Conselho da Revolução (Council of the Revolution) from 1976 to 1982, and as President of the Conselho da RTP (Council of the RTP) from 1974 to 1975. Eanes is married to Manuela Ramalho Eanes and has no children.
