His early life was marked by struggles, with his mother and three brothers dying in 1913 due to food poisoning. This event led to his expulsion from Switzerland, and he was later hospitalized in a psychiatric clinic.

Ligabue began painting in 1920, and his artistic capabilities were appreciated by Renato Marino Mazzacurati, who taught him the use of oil painting.
