The Oratorio del Rosario di San Domenico is a Baroque oratory located in the historic center of Palermo, Italy. It was built in the 17th century as part of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary and is now considered one of the most important examples of Sicilian Baroque art.
The oratory is known for its stunning stucco decorations by Giacomo Serpotta, a renowned Sicilian artist who also worked on other notable buildings in Palermo such as the Oratorio del Rosario di Santa Cita and the Oratorio di San Lorenzo. The stuccoes depict various religious scenes, including the life of the Virgin Mary and the mysteries of the rosary.
The interior of the oratory is divided into three naves, with a central altar dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario. The altarpiece, painted by Pietro Novelli in 1647, shows the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels and saints. On either side of the altar are two large paintings by Antonio Grano, representing the Immaculate Conception and St. Dominic.
The Oratorio del Rosario di San Domenico also houses a small museum displaying various religious artifacts and vestments. Among the most notable items is a 17th-century processional cross made of silver and decorated with precious stones.
Visitors to Palermo should not miss the opportunity to visit this magnificent oratory, which showcases the best of Sicilian Baroque art. The stucco decorations by Giacomo Serpotta are particularly impressive and demonstrate his mastery of this delicate technique.
