Introduction
St. Lorenz is a medieval church located in Nuremberg, Germany. It was built between the 13th and 15th centuries and is one of the most prominent churches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria. The church is known for its impressive architecture, art treasures, and rich history.
Architecture
The nave of St. Lorenz was completed by around 1360, while work on the choir began in 1439. The choir is a hall church in the late German sondergotik style of gothic architecture. The facade of the church is dominated by two towers, mirroring St. Sebald and indirectly Bamberg Cathedral with a sharp towering West portal doorway, and a well-indented rose window 9 meters in diameter.
Art Treasures
The art treasures of St. Lorenz were spared during the iconoclasm during the Reformation period. This is probably due to the fact that the building and furnishing of the church was financed by the city council and wealthy citizens who wanted to preserve the memory of their ancestors. The choir of the church is particularly impressive, with the carving of the Angelic Salutation by Veit Stoss and the monumental tabernacle by Adam Kraft.
History
St. Lorenz was one of the first churches in Germany to be Lutheran (1525). Despite this, the wealthy citizens of Nuremberg refused to remove the donated works of art, preserving the memory of their ancestors. During World War II, St. Lorenz was severely damaged by bombing raids. However, the church was rebuilt after the war and has since been fully restored.
